How’s everyone doing with those resolutions?!
Personally, I don’t make resolutions. I believe if we want something, we should change it for good, and not save it for January 1. I think Janetha read my mind whens he wrote:
“i wonder why people don’t scramble to make a whole crapload of goals on july 31st? what is it about turning the calendar to a new year that makes everyone recommit to their intentions, make big plans for huge changes and declare january 1 to be the start to the best year ever? “
Well-put, my friend!
While I admit that I was lax about what I was putting in my body over the holidays, I totally OD’d on the sweets, and I couldn’t seem to find the time to make it to the gym (although fresh baked goods appeared in my kitchen on a daily basis), I have stated that I am ecstatic to return to my “normal” routine of more workouts, more healthy dinners, and less sugar. I think we’re all willing to trade up our fried foods and cupcakes for healthier options… as long as they taste good.
Look no further!
I always usually make an effort to cook as healthily as I can without sacrificing flavor. Sometimes there’s a recipe I want to make, and there is just no way of substituting anything to get what I’m going for. But most times, there are simple ways to “healthify,” if you will, a meal. Some of my small, but significant changes to recipes include rarely using “extra” salt, swapping butter and oils for cooking spray, bulking up on the veggies and using less pasta, passing on the dressing for salads, making a sandwich without the yucky, fattening condiments, subbing whole grains whenever possible, or reducing the amount of a specific ingredient, etc.
A little common sense goes a long way. You get the idea. Some of those things are personal preferences (I don’t notice the missing salt, I don’t do mayo or most dressing anyway, and I prefer wheat bread to white… the list goes on). All I’m getting at is that these health and diet-related resolutions do not have to equal sacrifice.
Say it with me.
These health and diet-related resolutions do not have to equal sacrifice.
Louder!
These health and diet-related resolutions do not have to equal sacrifice.
I can’t hear you!
THESE HEALTH AND DIET-RELATED RESOLUTIONS DO NOT HAVE TO EQUAL SACRIFICE!!!

So, take for example these delicious bites of buffalo heaven.
Would you believe me if I told you that these really aren’t bad for you?! Even if they taste like they should be?
Buffalo Chicken Wontons
- .5 pound boneless skinless chicken breast
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/3 cup wing sauce
- 3/4 Italian blend cheese
- 1/4 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 30(ish) wonton wrappers
- salt and pepper to taste
- Preheat oven to 350 F.
- Dice chicken into small pieces. (You could always shred it after it’s cooked, if you prefer). Coat chicken with wing sauce and toss with minced garlic. Place chicken and sauce in a baking dish and cook, about 20 minutes or until done.
- Once cool, stir in the cheddar and Italian cheeses. Spoon about a teaspoon of mixture into each wonton wrapper. Moisten edges of wrapper and bring together in the middle, forming a little purse, or just stop at the triangle, like I did.
- Meanwhile, turn oven up to 400 F. Spray a baking pan with cooking spray, and set your wonton on top. Give the tops of the wontons a nice spritz of cooking spray. (This will help get them browned on top).
- After baking, let cool. Serve with a side of extra sauce for dipping.
And in pictures…
The original recipe called for lots of butter, some deep-frying, and a lot more cheese than what you see here.
Did I mention it was from the picture of health herself, Paula Deen?
Now I’m sure the original recipe was fabulous- and there’s nothing wrong with butter, cheese, and oil.
Unless you don’t want to do that to your body.
And if you do once in awhile, that’s ok!
But most of us don’t.
So why not enjoy them, but save our thighs the trouble?
LIGHT BULB!
I’m sure in a side-by-side taste test, the deep-fried, butter filled, uber-cheesy wontons would win. But, since these were so outstanding and I didn’t know the difference, it didn’t matter!
I’m talking crispy, crunchy, packed with flavor, and addicting. Once you pop, you can’t stop.
Trust me.
But the thing is, since these are reallly not that bad for you- you don’t have to feel guilty.
Have them for a snack. I did.
Have the rest for dinner. I did that too.
These only taste indulgent, but you saw the ingredient list. Lloyd agrees that these are one of the best things I’ve made recently. These totally redeemed me for the funky chicken.
They’re quick to make and cook, and will definitely please a crowd. I don’t know many people who don’t perk up when you utter those magic words: “buffalo chicken.” I totally see myself making these as an appetizer time and time again. Make them your secret weapon, too!

These scream, “Make me!”. They would be excellent for playoff games this weekend.
Yummy! I agree with Lisa: this is tailgate food for real! Well done, love the pictures!

These look fantastic!! They’d be a great football food:-)
oh yum!! i can already tell you that this is gonna be my new favorite! thanks for sharing this and have a great day.
These look so good! They look perfectly crispy without being fried. This would be a great appetizer for a party!
Hubby will LOVE these! Definitely bookmarking them for when I’m able to cook…which may be this weekend!!!
YAY for a new kitchen!
These look sooo good. A little blue cheese on top and I’d be in heaven!
I hate bleu cheese, but Lloyd drizzled some on top!
Wow, these look so yummy! Definitely would please my husband if I made these for dinner…soon!
He loves buffalo and well…I guess I do too
This recipe sounds amazing! I’m in a wonton recipe zone lately. And the hubs loves buffalo anything… I’ll have to try this ASAP.
What an unusual and perfect combination – would make Superbowl party cleanup a bit easier!
I see you around the blogworld all the time and just got here from your Gingerbread Cupcakes post featured on Foodbuzz. I remember seeing that post not long after you made them but for some reason never left a comment (they were absolutely beautiful by the way).
These look amazing! I love little appetizers stuffed in wonton wrappers. I’ve been planning on making little pumpkin raviolis out of mine for like forever! Need to get around to it before they go bad!
I do the exact same with my recipe adaptations! I never miss the salt and extra fatty sauces and I rarely add additional sweeteners. Funny how much your taste buds can change when you get all that processed junk out of your system!
Glad you stpped by!
Thanks for the nice words.
I just made mini egg rolls with wonton wrappers I am definitely going to have to give these spicy chicken wontons a try! I think my hubby would love them.
xo
Oh my goodness! These look just simply fabulous! Nice job, wow. I agree with you though, the resolutions should be for every day and not just when we start a new year. I also like that you seem to cook very similar to myself. Whenever I can I try to make things as healthy as possible without sacrificing the flavor…nicely done, I will be trying these for sure!
I saw these on Jenna’s blog and thought they looked really good. I’d like to try them both ways – healthy and unhealthy
This isn’t helping my buffalo sauce craving one bit =) looks great! I need to pick up some sauce and wonton wrappers! <3
xoXOxo

My husband would LOVE these!! Great pictures too
Thanks… these are def guy food!
I don’t make resolutions, either! Pass me one of those delicious wontons, please! They sound so gooood!
Ohhhhh I might make these this weekend for our playoff football game party! Great recipe!
These would please me…or a crowd! They look and sound great! And I agree that eating healthy, doesn’t require a sacrifice in taste. Thank you for sharing this delicious recipe, and thank you for your kind words on my blog. They mean so much to me!
These look amazing! I make buffalo chicken pockets with dough similar to pizza dough, but never tried it with wontons before – I think I like that idea better! I’ve gotta try this!
Slightly obsessed with buffalo chicken! I just made some over on my site yesterday – crunchy (and healthy) buffalo tenders – yum! I agree on the resolutions – not sure why we have to wait for Jan 1 to make a change in our lives! Start today!
LOVE “healthy” buff fingers!
These look so good! I made baked wontons once and they turned out a bit dry… Yours look awesome though. I just read your recipe more closely and I think it’s because you sprayed yours with cooking spray before baking. I totally will do that next time. thanks!
Wow these do look absolutely unhealthy!!! I love how you baked them and didn’t add all that butter and oil. I will definitely have to make these for my hubby. He was just complaining that I don’t make enough of the unhealthy stuff he likes. This will show him or so he thinks!
Yes, I think the spray always help crisp things, like butter or oil would… but zero cals!
i looooooooooove stuffing wonton wraps with things! these look phenomenal.
These look sooo good!
Those wontons look so good!
I don’t really make resolutions, but I do try to make a list of goals I want to accomplish in the new year.
Oh wow these look great. I just bought a ton of chicken too (on sale!) so I am looking for new ideas! Thanks for sharing
I try to make goals throughout the year too. But I can understand that after a few weeks of less-healthy living during the holidays, people feel inspired to become more healthy during the new year. For me, I am reminded of how crappy I feel when I eat a lot of sugar and treats and don’t work out regularly, so the new year is actually kind of nice to “start fresh.”
Yes, I totally agree with people being inspired to just “step away from the sugar!” too.
I feel much the same about resolutions.
And those little wontons are so cute! They’d make perfect little gameday appetizers!
My husband would absolutely die for these…I’m thinking superbowl party appetizers…
Those look absolutely delicious, I want to grab one straight from the screen. Such a good idea!
You’ve got my number with the Buffalo chicken! I’m going to have to try these! I’m with you about the resolutions. I like to make fun resolutions and goals for the new year.
Love. It. My hubs would love it too. Totally inventive way to play with wontons. And the chicken is healthy. So it would stick with our resolutions. Oh wait, we didn’t make any either
Great job!
Wow! My mouth is watering!
Fun play on traditional Buffalo wing flavors without the guilt- great idea!
I could not agree more with what you said about eating healthfully all year long and enjoying food! Your blog is awesome and I’m a big fan of a lot of your recipes, but this recipe is something that I’m dying to try! Thanks!
[...] 3 little words that instantly made my mouth begin to water…Buffalo Chicken Wontons! It seems Liz over at Blog is the New Black just happened to know I had a package of wonton wrappers that were expired desperately needed to be [...]
For me.. I think exercise is really key… 45 min a day, and I mean a hard workout… I don’t think you have t worry so much.. gosh, exercise does many things.. and keep busy in the kitchen and on your feet.. burns calories.
I have not had these in a long while… the recipe sure sounds delish. I think resolutions help us recommit with force than be lax…. I do look forward to them, in a way as keeping me on my toes…
Ummm these look AWESOME! Definitely making these!!
These look so good – I wish I could eat dairy and gluten. I’ll have to try something with buffalo sauce really soon just to stop my mouth from watering.
i LOVE buffalo sauce…love. Thanks for sparing me, my thigs AND my butt the extra hour cardio
oh. my. gosh.
haha seriously though i bookmarked this recipe!
you combined my love of buffalo chicken with chinese food. i love you
Best of both worlds!
These look really good. I’m definitely going to have to give it a try. I was in a mood to make hot sauce soon- this may just give me the nudge I needed. Thanks for the inspiration!
holy cow, these look so stinkin’ delicious! and so crispy!
Yup, these look fantastic and totally edible. I’ll bet if I served them to the group of guys that were going to watch the college championship game on Monday night they’d never know that they were somewhat good for them. Just might try it. Won ton wrappers….love ‘em.
