Chicken. It’s what for dinner.
Usually.
As you know, I’ve been trying to mix it up a bit around Casa de Blog is the New Black.
That doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue now, does it?
After settling on steak as the main component, it was time to give man food a makeover.
Steak and Cheese Sandwiches
Ingredients
Directions Worcestershire sauce… yea. Something I have now added to my pantry staples list… because mid-recipe I realized I didn’t have any. I know. Luckily, my good friend Google came to the rescue! Vegetarian Worcestershire Sauce Ingredients
Season steak with salt and pepper.
- Apple cider vinegar, ½ cup
- Water, 2 tbsp
- Soy sauce, 2 tbsp
- Brown sugar, 1 tbsp
- Garlic powder, ¼ tsp
- Mustard powder, ¼ tsp
- Onion powder, ¼ tsp
- Ginger, ¼ tsp (minced)
- Cinnamon, a pinch
- Pepper, a dash
Directions
Mix all ingredients in a pan over medium heat. Allow it to boil and then simmer on a low heat for 45 seconds more. Let it cool before using. One tablespoon of this can be used to substitute an equal amount of Worcestershire sauce.
The flavors of the peppers, onions and steak together with the garlic were excellent. I’d recommend adding more garlic if you you’re a fan, like me.
But… my honest opinion?
Liked but not loved.
Lloyd’s honest opinion?
Loved not liked.
Don’t get me wrong- it was a great sandwich, but unfortunately, it tasted too healthy. I think it was lacking cheese!
More cheese please!
I ended up just picking off the meat and vegetables and eating it without the bread and cheese. I think the sauce was a bit more “soy” than anything else… so it tasted more like stir fry on a roll. Not bad at all, just not what I was going for!
Sometimes you have to just throw the rules out the window and settle for the real deal.
The irony lies in the fact that I tried to make this healthier (for me) and Lloyd was the one who really liked it.
Men.

Looks yummy. Good game day grub.
I don’t ever order steak or eat it, but now you’ve got me wanting this sandwhich! The bread looks soft and the roasted red peppers make this look incredibly good too!
This sandwich looks really good. I cook chicken way too often, so maybe I’ll have to make this for my hubs. I may have to use less soy sauce, I can’t handle a lot of soy sauce or rice vinegar.
Sometimes you just gotta go all out & do the full fat cheese thing. Everything in moderation! It was a great attempt though, so good for you for trying! Maybe if you just used more of the reduced cheese that way it may have been meltier?
There isn’t a replacement for a real S&C. This proved it!
Sweet! Thank you for the vegetarian worcestshire recipt. Hubby is allergic to fish, and therere is allergic to the real worcestshire sauce. I have been buying the vegan stuff at the store, but this is made from things already in my kitchen!
mmmm – I Love doing steak sandwiches! These look YUM!
Steak, for me, is one of the most satiating proteins available. In a sandwich with all the additional accoutrements, it can be a weighty meal. This lightened-up version will get a try in my man cave!
Thanks for the reminder – I ran out of Worcestershire sauce, too!
That sandwich looks so good and juicy!
The recipe was easy and quick- luckily I had everything! But… I dumped the whole thing in there and I only needed a few tbsp!
That sandwich looks really good!!!! I haven’t had a steak sandwich in ages.
The steak was good- but it doesn’t top a “real” one!
If you want to give man food a makeover you gotta put some more punch in there. I don’t think the low fat Provolone is going to get any Sandwich Man very excited. Might I suggest Pepper Jack Cheese or Comte. Toss a few Jalapenos in there and I think you might achieve the makeover you seek.

Well, my goal was to lighten up the meal, hence the reduced fat cheese! I think it just need another slice or two. The boyfriend doesn’t do jalepenos or pepper jack, etc… we have two picky palates over here!
This looks so delicious! I could devour it right now.
I’m surprised you didn’t care for this sandwich because it looks delicious to me…although cheese can really make all the difference in the world!!
Have a wonderful weekend!
I love steak and cheese sandwiches, but I almost never eat the bread. I just pick out the steak, I like to think of it as low carb
I can’t wait to try this recipe for the steak!
I agree, skip the bread, go for the steak!
Please come to my house and make this for you. I will share my cookies
I have a lovely spare bedroom that you can stay in!! LOL
I meant me. Come to my house and make it for ME!!!
These look awesome! Love steak sandwiches!!
This looks great, especially with the gorgeous red peppers!
In my opinion, you can NEVER have too much garlic! I never thought about a substitution for Worcestershire sauce! Gotta love Google!
I really love steak and cheese, growing up around boys really made me a man-food kinda gal! These look awesome, my veg friends will dig the veg Worcestershire!
too healty?
) good one. it is an interesting way to have a nice sandwich.
It certainly looks flavorful! I love to make sandwiches for dinner but Grumpy, he tells me he has sandwiches for lunch and doesn’t even like the idea of a HOT sandwich for dinner. He’s so darned picky!
oh my husband will love this! Thanks for posting it!!
I realized the other night that I never cook red meats. My husband went out and *finally* had a hamburger to make up for our severe lack. Now, I feel like I need some redemption. This sounds perfect!
Looks great but couldn’t agree more – lack of cheese would definitely be an issue!
Oh wow, a certain guy in this house would love this!
The sandwich looks like a winner. The beef steak looks so juicy and with the cheese? YUMMILICIOUS!!
This looks delicious… my hubby would definitely love! I always try to make things healthier for myself too and my husband ends up loving it. Thanks for sharing!
I love that you didnt have worcesteir sauce but had every item to make it! My boyfriend would love this meal – I’m going to have to make it for him!
Wow, that sandwich looks fantastic. I’m not surprised that he loved it.
You call it vegetarian because you leave out the anchovies? I’m trying to think if that’s the only non-vegetable thing in there. I would never have anchovies in the house (yuck) so this sauce is a goldmine find! Thanks for the yummy looking sandwich and the new sauce recipe.
